About Dr. Jackie Speake the Science Geek:
I am an educator with 25+ years of experience in transforming diverse education settings, including classrooms, schools and educational organizations by effectively addressing issues of accountability by working with educators to support the design and implementation of standards-driven learning through integration of literacy into content areas, inquiry-based learning using the 5E instructional model, student-centered classrooms, and data analysis to drive instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.

Aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards Performance Expectations for Grade 3
The ready-to-use lessons are aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the disciplinary core ideas as identified in the Framework for K-12 Science Education (NRC, 2012). The big ideas of science are consistent - it is how we teach this content that makes a significant difference in student learning and retention of important science concepts. Lessons are inquiry-based and designed using the 5E Instructional Model from the Biological Science Curriculum Study (BSCS) led by Principal Investigator Roger Bybee, which works well with STEM lesson design, but is not the only model that works since constructivism through any model is synonymous with good teaching. Even with the release of the NGSS, recognizing the similarity between STEM initiatives all too common to most of us and the performance expectations in the NGSS, classroom application of science/engineering practices integrated with science content and phenomenon through the STEM process remains elusive.

LESSONS
Ready-to-Use Lessons: Sample lessons target students in grades 4-8 and are correlated to the Framework for K-12 Science Education’s Disciplinary Core Ideas (NRC 2012).
Standards-driven Instruction: The big ideas of science are consistent – how we teach this content makes a significant difference in student learning and retention of important science concepts.
Inquiry: The National Science Education Standards (NRC 1996) define inquiry as a set of interrelated processes where scientists and students ask questions about the natural world and investigate phenomena. It is a critical component of a science program.
5E Instructional Model: The Biological Science Curriculum Study led by Roger Bybee developed an instructional model for constructivism, called the 5E instructional model. This model is based on constructivist theories and enhances student inquiry through a series of planning strategies.
Claims, Evidence, Reasoning: Engaging in scientific explanations improves students’ ability to reason and become more adept at critical and analytical thinking.
